With diverse experience in both traditional choral and contemporary a cappella music, Ernest Hui is an avid composer and arranger. He is dedicated in exploring novel possibilities in Cantonese choral music, and his music has been showcased in local and overseas concerts, festivals and competitions, in including Australia, China, Germany, Korea, Japan, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the UK and more.

Himself performing with the Hong Kong Melody Makers, his a cappella arrangement won “Best Arrangement” and “Golden Harmony Award” (champion) at the 3rd Asian Youth a cappella Singing Competition in South Korea. His Cantonese choral piece “Forever Apart” was selected as one of the top fifteen works in the Second IFCM International Competition for Choral Composition. He has been commissioned by the Yat Po Singers, producing a cappella-theatrical works “Vox Populi“ and “The Falling Tree”. He also composed original score and was the music director for the a cappella-theatre “Twisted Fate”, which music excerpt was showcased in the Taipei Vocal Asia Festival. Ernest Hui conducted the premiere of his arrangement of “Be Thou My Vision” at the Christian Ministry to Visually Impaired Persons 40th Anniversary Concert, and the music was recorded by celebrated tenor Paul Phoenix, with violinist Ruda Lee and a cappella group the Pelicans.

Hui studied voice with Ms Chan Siu Kwan and read music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where he completed his Master of Music (Composition) as a scholarship awardee under the tutelage of Professor Chan Wai Kwong Victor. His music was recorded and published in the CUHK Music Department’s 50th Anniversary Celebration CD “Ad Excellentiam”.

Ernest Hui also coaches a cappella and choral music at various schools and institutes. He was the Resident Composer of the Hong Kong Melody Makers, and also the Music Director of the Macao Cultural Centre Children’s Choir.
